Our shop first started in Petra alongside the Treasury. At that time there was no shop at all in Petra selling souvenirs to the tourists - can you imagine? Our father set up a stall with a small wooden table and sold simple articles that he and our mother made themselves: small ceramic oil lamps, woven camel hangings and saddle bags and especially bottles containing the colored sand from Petra arranged in decorative patterns. Later he moved to the entrance to the Siq.
We pride our selves on always using natural sand, not the colored stuff that is fairly widespread. Agreed, like that we could show a beautiful blue sky, but unlike the natural sand it will fade fairly quickly when exposed to sunlight. The sand in our bottles is completely natural, and not mixed with dried poster paint!
We go to collect it in the mountains near to Petra. Obviously we do not chip stones from the walls in the site, but the same formations are frequent nearby, and we know a tiny valley where we can take what stones we like without upsetting anybody. Often we go there in a family outing and stock as many stones as we need for several months. We go to collect it in the mountains near to Petra. We Shipp WorldwideOf course we still sell sand bottles and also specialize in rugs and jewellery. Now we have another much larger shop a couple of hundred meters from the entrance to Petra, close to the Silk Road Hotel. Come and see us; even though the shop is modern, there is still no charge for looking and we shall be happy to chat with you!
