Many people ask us just how we go
about making the designs. We are happy to show you if you are
interested! Our tools are a simple knitting needle, and a funnel
onto which we have soldered a long narrow spout to be able to
direct the sand to exactly the spot we want it. Here is a series
of photos of a camel being made in the sand.
We sift in a mixture of coloured
sand to begin with Then with the edge of the funnel, we scoop
out a hollow Into the hollow we direct a small amount of sand of
a contrasted colour. We run the knitting needle down through the
contrasting sand alongside the edge of the glass.
The legs appear and the tail in
the same fashion. Then the sand is
coaxed to one side to make the neck The head follows, and the
darker sand is surrounded with the original color. A touch of
the edge of the funnel makes the neck and the head more elegant
- and we are ready to make a "camel caravan" in front of some
hills, as in the bottle above.
An abstract design in a small
bottle - even more difficult than a large one A series of
patterns to show what we can do! An "Indiana Jones" bottle.
